Overview

Espionage was a game that I worked on from September 2020 to December 2020 for both my DES302 - Game Design II course, and my DES365 - Game Feel course. It had a focus on Kinesthetic Feel for the Game Feel course, and a focus on the Fantasy engagement type for the Game Design II course, as those were the primary requirements for each course.

I chose to go with a 1960-1970s spy theme as I developed a fairly strong diegetic menu for the first project in my Game Feel course, and then I chose to run with it for the remainder of the course, building the HUD project and the Kinesthetic Feel project within the same Unreal project and utilizing the same theme.

Post Mortem

Things that went right:

  • I was able to hit the ground running in Unreal Engine 4, despite this being one of my first projects in the game engine.

  • The menu I created was well-executed.

  • I gained more experience in Unreal Engine 4.

  • For a primarily UX-focused project, it turned out pretty good.

Things that went wrong:

  • I didn't have the experience or the time to get Patrolling Guard AI to work.

  • The project could've been stronger with deeper systems.

What I've learned from this experience:

  • Dedicate more time to AI or avoid designing games that require complex AI behavior.

  • Focus on delivering a smaller, more-polished experience for future projects.
